The development of a low carbon community should take into consideration sustainable development and environmental protection as well as local innovation. This project implemented low carbon and sustainable action items, low carbon and sustainable homeland certification for communities, guidance and counsel for Da Cheng County’s environmental education with a competent team, and planning of environmental education programs with on-site practice. The achievement of this project includes the following: 1. 5 low carbon sustainable action items to help Da Cheng County to build low carbon communities were completed, including a demonstrative rainwater tank in a primary school; a garden street light with renewable power; a carbon footprint calculation for marketing a specialty; an observation and study tour to Long Mu Community for low carbon competence; propagation of low carbon homeland with 2 certifications; and diagnosis of energy saving in 7 schools in Da Cheng County for further low carbon improvement. 2. For better development of low carbon environmental education in Da Cheng County, a planning and implementation team was formed in order to provide professional counsel in communities’ lesson plans with experts from fields of ecology, environmental education, low carbon energy saving, and rural development. 3. According to communities’ characteristics, 5 workshops were held for residents to participate and learn the content of low carbon community and environmental education; 2 special sets of lesson plans were designed for Xi Gang and Tan Qian Communities to implement environmental education by local residents themselves.
