Development of Sampling and Analytical Methods for Acetamide and other 7 Compounds in Stacks and Ambient Air (2/2)

Absrtact
The objective of this project was to develop sampling and analytical methods for hazardous air pollutants, including hydrazine, ethyleneimine, trichloroacetic acid, and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate in stacks and ambient air. Hydrazine was sampled using methanol solvent with benzaldehyde as derivatizing agent (derivatization method) and then analyzed by HPLC/UV or LC/MS/MS. Ethyleneimine was sampled using folin’s reagent (derivatization method) and then analyzed by LC/MS/MS. Trichloroacetic acid was sampled using methanol solvent and then analyzed by LC/MS/MS. Toluene-2,4-diisocyanate was sampled using toluene solvent with 1-(2-pyridyl)piperazine as derivatizing agent (derivatization method) and then analyzed by LC/MS/MS. Based on experimental results, as for stacks, the detection limits of hydrazine and trichloroacetic acid were 3.8×10-4 ppmv and 1.422×10-3 ppmv, respectively (sampling volume was 100L, 5 L/min × 20 min, isokinetic sampling). And the detection limits of ethyleneimine and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate were 3.4×10-3 ppmv and 4.96×10-5 ppmv, respectively (sampling volume was 10L, 1 L/min × 10 min, constant flow). As for ambient air, the detection limits of hydrazine, ethyleneimine, trichloroacetic acid, and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate were 5.7×10-3 ppbv, 0.296 ppbv, 1.147 ppbv and 4.0×10-3 ppbv , respectively (sampling volume was 60L, 1 L/min × 60 min, constant flow). The accuracy and precision of hydrazine (HPLC/UV) was 95.993.74% (@10 mg/L). The accuracy and precision of hydrazine (LC/MS/MS) was 103.94.3% (@10 g/L). The accuracy and precision of ethyleneimine were 96.12.1% (@200 g/L), and 104.62.9% (@10 g/L). The accuracy and precision of trichloroacetic acid (LC/MS/MS) were 101.12.2% (@150 g/L), and 99.74.0% (@100 g/L). The accuracy and precision of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (LC/MS/MS) were 100.93.7% (@20 g/L), and 108.04.0% (@5 g/L). The sampling and analytical methods developed in this project were proven to be practical by surveying at least 4 field samplings (stacks or ambient air). Besides, two technical communication seminars were taken place in September and October. All the study results were reported in the technical drafts for EPA’s reference.
