This project evaluated the feasibility of the application for collection, manufaction of solid biofuel for herbal biomass, woody biomass and bio-filber extracted from municipal solid waste (MSW). Those solid biofuel were co-fired with coal and monitored and analyzed the combustion efficiency and output pollutant emissions. The cryptomeria from NTU experimental forest, rice straw from Lucao and MSW from Ilan County were used as raw materials for the test. The result indicates that all the solid biofuel co-fired with coal can reduce the emission of SOX and NOX significantly. However the concentration of PM2.5 in gas product became more the pure coal combustion. The K, Na and Ca contents in the co-firing fly ash were 5-7 times than pure coal combustion fly ash. Using rice straw pellet, wood pellet, rice straw bio-coal and woody bio-coal as alternative fuels have the CO2 emissions reduction potential were 2.40,2.39,2.42 and 2.39 kg CO2e/kg to replace coal and 2.70,2.67,2.72 and 2.66 kg CO2e/kg replace heavy oil. Due to the low prices of coal and higher production costs of solid biofuels, to replace the heavy oil in small and medium-sized boiler as clean and cheaper fuel will be the feasible options.
