The major objective of the project is to develop the sampling and analysis technology of ambient volatile amine pollutants. The capability of on-line amines monitoring issue is also discussed. Most analytical procedures reported for the analysis of amines feature separation methods. Gas chromatography (GC), High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ion chromatography (IC) are discussed in the determination of amines. Derivatization of amines is frequently employed to GC and HPLC which makes it disadvantage to build up an automated system for on-line monitoring. IC was chosen for this study because this technique allows separation of the amines without the need for tedious and time-consuming derivatization reactions. Six chemicals, including methylamine, dimethylamine, ethylamine, isopropylamine, propylamine, and diethylamine were selected as the target compounds for test the analysis method. All the target compounds were successfully separated by ion chromatography and detected. The coefficient of determination (R2) for calibration curve of each compound was better than 0.998. The efficient impinger technique was applied for the air sampling. Impinge/IC is possible to act as a trigger driven unit for amine motoring. Commercialized on-line impinger/IC is available now.
