This study is to explore the risk perceptions of nanotechnology of the general population in Taiwan. The main contents include: (1) to collect and review the risk perception publications; (2) to design a risk perception core questionnaire; (3) to conduct a survey on risk perceptions of general population; (4) to investigate the media reports on nanotechnology; and (5) to summarize the policy implication of public concerns on nanotechnology.
We completed 1,077 randomized telephone survey of Taiwanese people of 18 years and older, and 1,068 web-based internet survey of 20 to 49 year olds. Further, we investigated the conotents of news reports on nanotechnology in four major newspaper in Taiwan from Jan, 2011 to March, 2013. The results of telephone survey indicated that almost nighty percent of Taiwanese people have heard of nanotechnology in Taiwan, and about half of them have used nano-products. Though the familiarity of nanotechnology in Taiwan was higher than that was in the Eropean countries and the US, the knowledge of nanotechnology was lower as compared to the US surveys. The news reports on nanotechnology are increasing steadily in the past few years. However, they were mainly reported in the sections of Business (45.7%), Living and society (18.1), Regional (14%), and very few were reported in the sections of Science and technology (4.5%) or Education (3.4%). The main sources of information in these reports on nanotechnology were from industry and academia. There were very few information provided by the governmental agencies. Policy implication of the study was discussed at the end of this report.
