The purpose of this study was to apply the supported liquid membranes with strip dispersion (SLM-SD) technology on separation as well as recovery and purification of two rare earth metal ions, cerium and lanthanum, from spent glass polishing powder after leaching processes. In this work, through solvent leaching processes, the light yellow mixed sulfuric cerium and lanthanum solutions can be well fabricated for the applications of the following research. D2EHPA and PC-88A with a concentration ratio of 1:4, Isopar-L, and aqueous hydrochloric acid were used to be the complex extractants, diluent, and stripping solutions respectively in order to investigate the separation and recovery efficiency of the support liquid membranes with strip dispersion process along the first sixty mimutes operations. Cerium ions (Ce4+) can be successfully removed from the mixed sulfuric cerium and lanthanum solutions in this stage. Additionally, PC-88A, and aqueous sulfuric acid were applied to be the extractants and stripping solutions respectively in order to investigate the separation and recovery efficiency of the support liquid membranes with strip dispersion process at pH 4.0 after the first sixty mimutes operations. Cerium ions (Ce3+) as well as lanthanum ion (La3+) can be successfully separated and recovered in this following process. Some parameters influencing on permeabilities of cerium and lanthanum ions including the acidity of mixed sulfuric cerium and lanthanum solutions, concentrations and catagory of extractants, as well as stripping agent concentrations were investigated in detailed. Results showed the acidity of mixed sulfuric cerium and lanthanum solutions will affect the permeabilities of cerium and lanthanum ions. Under these experimental parameters, the goal of 94.5 % and 98.5 % separation ratio as well as 88.2% and 100% purification ratio for cerium and lanthanum ions respectively can be achieved. Results of this study can provide useful evidences for further practical applications.
