This project followed “contaminants screening process of drinking water quality regulation” to select compounds for monitoring and evaluation. Eight contaminants, beryllium, boron, cobalt, glyphosate, perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, fecal/thermotolerant coliform, and E. coli were selected to be monitored in six representative drinking water treatment plants and evaluated their risk in drinking water in Taiwan. The result showed that there was no significant healthy risk in drinking water from beryllium, boron, cobalt, glyphosate, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, fecal/thermotolerant coliform, and E. coli. However, PFOA was detected in some raw water and finished water samples and was suggested to be monitored closely to determine the risk in drinking water. This project conducted “contaminants screening process of drinking water quality regulation” and modified the frame of it, referring to the unregulated contaminant monitoring rule of US EPA. Monitoring plan of universe contaminant candidate list was suggested to collect the occurrence information in Taiwan. The information will use to evaluate if a contaminant should be included into contaminant candidate list or not. Besides, this project also reviewed the regulation of phenols, substances that impact health (except volatile organic compounds and pesticide), and the Article 4 of drinking water quality standard. It was suggested that the standard of substances that impact health (except volatile organic compounds and pesticide) were reasonable, expect nickel, mercury, and chlorite. So it was not necessary to modify the standard for those substances, expect nickel, mercury, and chlorite. Finially, this project proposed to substitute the “Drinking water source water quality standard” by “Drinking water source water quality guideline”. However, the expects meeting suggested to evaluate this change with an independent project.
