The implementation of this project was to continuously assist in operation of the Kaohsiung City Sustainable Low Carbon Homeland Office, in order to promote related works of climate chance and green transformation, including drawing city's low-carbon and sustainable contents, reviewing and managing plans, maintaining operated functions, and presenting results in sustainable areas by taking each department participating in the Environmental Protection Administration Certification system.
In order to achieve the practice of a low-carbon sustainable society, Kaohsiung City Government actively promoted the transformation of low-carbon campus and the certification of low-carbon campus standards, as well as to educate the low-carbon concept in daily life. This year, schools took the lead in promoting low-carbon or non-toxic diets projects. In addition to allowing students to eat healthy and bring the outcomes into student catering, the project team has accomplished the feasibility and benefit assessment based on the data collected. Also, the Environmental Protection Bureau has approved the Wenshan Elementary School in Fengshan District as the model. The renovation projects include the operation of campus farms, simple easygreenhouses, aquaponics systems (earthworm) promotion, as well as food and agriculture related education courses. After the completion of the project, it is expected to increase 2,000 peoplefor low-carbon organic diet, 1,000 people to participate in food and agriculture education courses, and reduce 600 kg of raw food waste. The total amount of carbon reduction can be reachedat 1,750 kgCO2e. The outcomes are further announced. It is hoped that by the setting of demonstration sites, the benefits for attracting the participation of neighboring schools and residents will be achieved.
In the various counseling operations for the community within the city, the project team hasaccomplished the operation of 12 potential communities, 3 combined communities and 3 sophisticated communities. The promotion items included wall planting or hedges, aquaponics systems (earthworm), kitchen waste recycle and reuse, as well as low-carbon or non-toxic diets. The annual GHG emission reduction was 38,935kgCO2e.Moreover, the project team also assisted 40 villages (communities) to get their participation certification of the Low Carbon Sustainable Homeland Ranking. We acquired Bronze level certification for one community and three villages, and Kaohsiung City also obtained Silver level certification in the ranking of city/county-level.
In addition, the project team made all sectors understood the certificate ranking system of low-carbon sustainable homeland by handling two low-carbon education trainings, and also assisted in the registration and Bronze level certification.We arrangedtwospecific community tours - Guoyi Community in Liuying District of Tainan City and Tianpu Community in Yujing District of Tainan City, in order to strengthen the concept in sustainability for community representatives. We also held twolow-carbon homeland training courses, conducting practical operations to enhance participation and interest. Furthermore, the project team held two low-carbon diet activities with green restaurants. Dietitians introduced the idea of low-carbon eating to the public, and assisted them to promote low-carbon concept to their communities.
As for media promotion, a report named “Kaohsiung City achieved Silver Level in Low Carbon Sustainable Homeland Ranking” was published.It is hope that cooperation among city government, administrative districts and villages, allowing Kaohsiung rising from its roots as an industrial manufacturing city into a sustainable and low-carbon metropolis. The project team also made informational materials with environmentally-friendly purpose, and promotional leaflets featuring Kaohsiung City.
