Air pollution control is animportant part of environmentalprotection for all mankind, the control methods require multiple fronts, therefore, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has useda portionof air pollution control fund to establish the air quality purification area(hereinafter called the Aquapu Area)for tree planting,as the result, to improvethe air quality of Taiwan.Since then, EPA has approved a total of 942Aquapu areas covering anarea of about 1,774.03hectaresand the shaded bike traillengthof about 293kilometers.
The content of this project is a continuous work toprovide the inventory, assessment and monitoring related works ofthe existing and newly built Aquapu Area in order toassist EPA to establish a quality living environment in Taiwan.
This project has also completed(1)draw up the drafting of related guidelinesused as the basesfor nurserymanagement and Aquapu Areas adoption.(2) on-site inventory, monitoringand assessment works.(3) avertical green wall demonstration projectin Hai-feng village of Taichung City. (4)build a new webportalforAquapu Area and plant nursery website, and alsoupdating related information regularly in order to provide thelatest status
in implementation as wellas to improvethe performance and management efficiency.
Vertical green walls were established at Kaohsiung Municipal Nanzih Primary School and its effect on indoor air quality was determined. Results show that the classrooms behind the green wall have consistently lower air temperatures, and concentrations of formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and ozone than those without. PM2.5 and PM10 levels in the classrooms, on the other hand, fluctuate due to wind speed and direction. For that very reason, the green wall planted in a vertical planter box facing the northeast side has minimal effects on reducing PM.The classrooms with green wall reduced 0.8-1.1℃, 2%-4% CO2, and 20%-22% formaldehyde as compared with those without green wall. The green wall consisting of hanging plants, however, was able to reduce 6% PM2.5 on average. We have also established green walls with climbers and hanging plants in two elementary schools in Yunlin and Wenyuan Primary School in Tainan. Due to the plants being newly planted, thegreen walls have no significant impact on surrounding air quality currently. We have newly redesigned active living wall (ALW) module, and conducted an experiment on its formaldehyde and PM10 removal capabilities. Results show that this new ALW module hadhigher capacity to reduce formaldehyde and PM10 than the old module. The newly redesigned ALW had a higher formaldehyde removal ability than a commercial air purifier.
We haveassisted the EPA in creating posters and promotingthe importance of purifying the air by utilizing plants;publishing「the People and Environment」booklet; one AquapuAreamaintenance assessmentforum andawards ceremony for recognizingexcellence in Aquapu site adoption; and 10 greenery promotional activities. We have also held 10 “Seeding teacher” training sessions and provided other assistance in administrative duties.
