In order to effectively improve the efficiency of remediation and management of the contaminated sites in Taiwan, it is necessary to fully understand the sites’ characteristics, including the hydrogeological conditions, groundwater flow regime, contaminant properties, and location of the contaminant plume. Thus, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has implemented the "Construction of Mass Flux Technology and Its Application in Contaminated Site Assessment" project. In this project, the tasks included selecting a demonstration site for the mass flux assessment, construction of the conceptual site model, calculating the mass flux in groundwater, and establishment of the remediation strategy and management plan. This can be used as a reference for other contaminated sites.
In this project, a total of 10 sites were selected to calculate the mass flux of contaminants by two different methods(Transect based on Isocontours, and solute transport models). Suggestions were provided to each individual contaminated site to improve the remediation performance. In addition, one site was selected as a pilot site, and Continuous-Multichannel-Tubing (CMT) well was installed for supplementary surveys and technical tests to enhance the quality of the three-dimensional Conceptual Site Model. Finally, this project completed a technical guideline of mass flux assessment, held three meetings for technical discussions, and one meeting on the promotion of the mass flux guideline.
