The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was held in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 26 to September 4 this year. This was one of the major international events held by the United Nations. More than 30,000 delegates from governments, UN agencies, multilateral financial institutions, and other major groups participated and assessed global changes since the United Nations Conference on Environment Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992. A major achievement of sustainable development UNCED was Agenda 21 - a comprehensive action plan for sustainable development. The main objective of the WSSD is to answer some of the following questions: What the accomplishments have been made since 1992? How have participating countries been implementing Agenda 21? Have they ratified the conventions they agreed to since 1992? What obstacles have they encountered? What lessons have they learned about what works and what does not work? What new issues have emerged to change the situation? Where should we focus further efforts?
The objective of this project is to facilitate the participation of the official delegates from Taiwan to the WSSD (designated by the Sustainable Development Council of the Executive Yuan) as well as to help the international society understand our achievements in sustainable development.
The content of this project involved five major tasks: (1) to collect and to disseminate information on WSSD to the delegates before the event, e.g., the Plan of Implementation and the Chairman’s Paper, (2) to help the official delegates to register at the WSSD activities (including the Summit itself, side events and parallel events) and to provide other logistic assistances, (3) to organize a “Conference on WSSD” before the event to raise awareness of local stakeholders, (4) to produce promotional material, including 5000 copies of CD (entitled “Sustainable Development in Taiwan”) and two pamphlets, 30,000 copies of each (entitled “Cu
