The industrial and municipal waste treatment has been gradually shifting from the previous landfill process to incineration in Taiwan. However, the solid wastes generated by the incineration process, both fly ash and bottom ash, still need to be buried in the landfill, either untreated or after solidification. The availability of the adequate landfill site is very limited on the island. Besides, the stability of the solidified waste is still unknown and controversial. To make the incineration waste to be un-hazardous or, furthermore, to find ways to re-use the waste is becoming a very important task. Ash samples were collected by Taiwan EPA from various incinerators and were analyzed for dioxins and furans using USEPA method 1613B. A total of 26 samples were analyzed and the results indicate that the sample concentrations are between 0.0003~42.9 ng-TEQ/g.
