As products with high quality and new functions are being produced by information industry to meet consumers’ needs, life of products is shortening. Take personal computer (PC) as an example, product life of usage is about only 4-6 years. In industrialized countries, rising consumption of information products brings about great amount of scrappage that is often discarded and causes serious problems of pollution management. Therefore, disposition of scrappage information products will become an important issue in the future.
According to the 2006 report of “Investigation Report of Digital Divide,” by Research, Development and Evaluation Commission of Executive Yuan, frequency of computer usage, internet penetration, and computer ownership differ from urbanization of residential areas. Residents with high computer usage often have longer ownership and digital divide is quite obvious in suburban areas.
The core of the 2007 project is: “Recycling Computers for New Hope,” which ties to recycling resources and bridging digital divide by donating used computers to students of remote areas and minority groups in the hope of a better future by offering training of basic computer skills and information technology. Furthermore, the project can reduce pollution by scrappage information products and promote social education of recycling. The main goal this year includes recycling and reassembling 3,800 used computers, and forwarding those recycled computers to remote areas for extension education of recycling and bridging digital divide.
