This project was to (1) determine concentrations of chlordane, toxaphene, mercury, organotin compounds (TBT, DBT, MBT, TPhT, DPhT and MPhT), phthalates (PAEs: DMP, DEP, DBP, BBP, DEHP and DOP), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs: Tri-BDE, Tetra-BDE, Penta-BDE, Hxta-BDE, Hepta-BDE, Octa-BDE, Nona-BDE and Deca-BDE) in sediments and fishes from six Taiwanese rivers (Ho-Lung River, Da-An River, Wu River, Chi-sha River, Hualien River and Pa-Nan River); (2) plan the investigative priority on the environmental distribution of regulated 258 toxic substances; (3) establish database searching system for concentrations of regulated toxic substances in different environmental compartments investigated in the previous projects.
There were 828 sediments and 414 fishes collected in this year. In sediment samples, the mean concentration and concentration range of analyzed toxic substances was ND for chlordane, <2.0 (ND-4.1) ug/kg dw for toxaphene, 0.050 (<0.010-0.248) mg/kg dw for mercury, <0.05 (ND-0.08) mg/kg dw for DMP, 0.16 (ND-0.67) mg/kg dw for DEP, 0.18 (<0.05-0.52) mg/kg dw for DBP, 0.24 (<0.05-0.70) mg/kg dw for BBP, 1.5 (0.23-8.1) mg/kg dw for DEHP, ND-<0.05 mg/kg dw for DOP, 5.06 (0.122-67.6) ug/kg dw for PBDEs, <0.05 (ND-0.08) mg/kg dw for TBT, <0.05 (ND-0.09) mg/kg dw for DBT, <0.05 (ND-0.25) mg/kgdw for MBT, <0.05 (ND-0.21) mg/kg dw for MPhT, <0.05 (ND-0.11) mg/kg dw for DPhT and <0.05 (ND-0.07) mg/kg dw for TPhT. For fish samples, the mean concentration and concentration range of analyzed toxic substances was ND-<1.0 ug/kg ww for chlordane, <1.0 (ND-2.8) ug/kg ww for toxaphene, 0.052 (0.012-0.208) mg/kg ww for mercury, <0.03 (ND-0.07) mg/kg ww for DMP, 0.06 (ND-0.19) mg/kg ww for DEP, <0.03 (<0.03-0.04) mg/kg ww for DBP, 0.03 (ND-0.10) mg/kg ww for BBP, 0.38 (0.03-1.2) mg/kg ww for DEHP, <0.03 (ND-0.07) mg/kg ww for DOP, <0.01 (ND-0.03) mg/kg ww for TBT, 0.01 (ND-0.15) mg/kg ww for DBT, <0.01 (ND-0.01) mg/kg ww for MBT, 0.02 (ND-0.09) mg/kg ww for MPhT, 0.02 (ND-0.12) mg/kg ww for DPhT, 0.40 (ND-1.6) mg/kg ww for TPhT, and 0.813 (0.121-3.63) ug/kg ww for PBDEs.
Eight rules were made to screen regulated 258 toxic substances in order to determine their investigative priority. First, the regulated toxic substances were divided into two categories by whether they have standard analytical methods. From each category, regulated toxic substances were further separated into three levels (priority, less priority, temporarily not necessary to investigate) according to the other seven screening rules. For the toxic substances in the priority level, the investigation plan was made according to their fate and transport in the environment (i.e. in air, soil, water, sediment or biota).
The database searching system for concentrations of regulated toxic substances has established based on Microsoft Office Access software. By giving the searching keys, this system will present the searching results as tables and graphs.
