The 2009 Environmental Cup “Resources Recycling” Debate Competition attracted a total of 32 universities and colleges around Taiwan to participate. The two topics chosen for this year’s competitions were “Environmental Education Is More Effective in Achieving the Zero Waste Objective/ Environmental Legislation Is More Effective in Achieving Zero Waste Objective” and “Resources Exhaustion Is the Main Reason Responsible for the Destruction of the Mankind/ Global Warming Is the Main Reason Responsible for the Destruction of the Mankind”.
The planning, organization and implementation of the 2009 Environmental Cup Debate competition aim to enhance participants’ understanding of environmental issues. This was achieved through the process of topic explanation seminar, the collection of information, the preparation of debate materials and the comments made by judges. On the other hand, innovative ideas on environmental policy presented by participants were also collected through the competition.
In addition, to raise college students’ interests in environment protection issues, new elements were included in this year’s competition. First well-known fashion models were invited to promote the importance of resources recycling in the kick-off press conference as a way to increase media and exposure. The competition system was also changed to the more lively “international debate competition” to attract audience attention and thus participation. Furthermore, power point presentation was allowed and experts’ comments were extended for the final round of the competition. The objectives of these new designs and added elements were to improve the effectiveness of the promotion of environmental protection and resources recycling activities. It was also to promote hand-on participations by all the members of the society to protect the environment. Through this week-long event, it was hoped that participating students will be able to play an active role as opinion leaders and to expand their influence among fellow students on the awareness of the value of environmental protection works. This awareness was an important pillar in achieving the establishment of a sustainable homeland.
